Getting Poopoo to use the Potty

Lately Poops been telling me as soon as he goes pee pee or poopoo and asking me to change his diaper. I took this as a hint he was ready to potty train. I asked him if he wanted to use the potty like a big boy and of coarse his answer was "NO".

I know there are several different methods of potty training and I think it all depends on the child. I know my son well enough to know that the best way to get him to do anything is to use sweets.

I started telling Paxton that if he used the potty I would give him 2 M&M's of coarse his reaction was "OK" but as soon as we would get into the restroom he would change his mind. I decided to get his monkey cookie Jar, fill it with M&M's and set it on his bathroom counter just out of reach. My thinking is that it will be a constant reminder that if he uses the potty he will get 2 M&M's making him want to try.

With my new plan in place I called him into the bathroom. I showed Paxton the monkey cookie Jar and asked him if he wanted to try and go potty "OK". I was so proud that he sat on the potty and gave it a try. I wanted so bad to give him a M&M for his effort but I know I need to stick to my guns.

I hope he learns soon! I am having an absolute horrible time potty training Summer. She just does not care at all to try and go in the potty. Not even for M&M's.

What I did with Brady...at first it was just getting him to sit on the potty. I would set the timer for four minutes and if he sat there he got an M&M. Because sitting there that long is a big deal! I would give him lots of water and watch for signs that he had to go. Then once he had learned to sit on the potty (no more M&M's) at this point we worked on actual going. It took a long time but one day he had alot of water and I think for the first time experiences what it felt to hold it. We made a mad dash for the potty and he made it! So he got M&M's for that. After that he knew in order to get an M&M he had to go in the potty. Another thing is he really wanted Cars underwear. We made this big deal about him not pooping or peeing on Lightening McQueen. I do want to say too that after potty training two children and pulling my hair out, until they are really ready it's just about them getting the hang up it at first. It's very frustrating as a mom when you sit and sit in the bathroom with no success. So long story short don't put to much pressure on yourself or him and it will only happen when he is ready. Brady didn't actually get potty trained until he was almost four.

my theory, he will get it when he's ready. Coen is in underwear all day now (we still have our accidents) but a good thing about Coen is he hates to be wet! and if he has soiled!!! so he tells us now when he has to go- loves peeing outside, you can try that too ;) at first he was having no part in it, after he told me the i pee pee or poo poo and turned his butt, we put big boy underwear on right then and he has gone since, he does get rewarded now for only going poo- poo, our next step is going places in underwear and sleeping. but i am not rushing it.
